Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This section is a collection of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) to do with general webdesigning and also Internet activity.

Although not a 100% effective measure of learning what all the terms are and what they actually mean, we felt it you should become a custom to the more "popular" terms in use today - so called "web-talk"!

If you have any questions which are not answered here, or wish us to discuss anything in detail, please visit our contact us or technical and customer support pages.

Why have a web site and what will a website do for me?

Your internet presence exposes you to a greater number of potential customers. Between 150 and 180 million people have access to the World Wide Web. This figure is growing on a daily basis. So you can have a worldwide market presence with minimal costs (even if you are just trying to attract a national market - a bonus there!)

You can sell 'Products and Services' - your web site can be the gateway to potential customers. You can educate your visitors with detailed information about the benefits of your product and/or service.

E-mail is rapidly becoming the choice of communication between companies and individuals too.

The web can be used as a 'Flexible Marketing Tool' - use your site creatively to inform your customers of changes to your business/products or services. You can advertise any special promotions on your web site too!

The Internet is a cheap form of advertising, with access provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year - no other medium can achieve this, so theorically your business is operational all the time!!

Your web site can provide information about the 'Point of Contact' - it can give your customers the information on-line on who to contact and how to contact them. You can give directions to your organisation so that your customer can find you. Response forms on web sites enable visitors to request information from your organisation sometimes outside of your normal business hours.

Generally, you can provide a more professional image for your company and show that you are at the fore-front ahead of some of your competitors. You can improve your company's image with your domain name printed on your company stationery.

Remember that the world wide web is for everyone and not just for big companies/corporations! The small to medium business can now compete in an open market along with the big boys!

Can I make money with my website?

This is probably the most asked and anticipated question when one contemplates creating a website. The answer is yes. However, that isn't what people mean when they ask the question. What they really are asking is "If I create a website, does that guarantee that I will make money?" The answer to that question is "NO" - I can't guarantee that!

Why can't I just place a classified ad and have someone call me to sell my products?

You can do that but the results will depend on where you place your ad. How many people will see it. Internet shopping malls, Internet Yellow Pages, and classified advertising venues would be your best bet. However, a classified ad is usually listed alphabetically within a category heading and that could limit the chance that someone would ever read your ad.

What exactly do website developers and designers do?

Basically, we can handle all aspects of planning and creating the entire website. This can include gathering marketing data, layout and design, programming, hosting and promotion. Or, if you just need one specific action, we can provide that action by itself. Our designers are mainly concerned with the look and layout of the site and it's pages. Developers are concerned with the other aspects such as website promotion. Both work together to create a successful web presence.

How do you ensure your clients needs are met?

We offer a personalised approach that ensures quick service and the elimination of as many problems and confusions as possible. As developers and designers, we want to ensure that you get answers to your questions and concerns and that your needs are actually met.

How long does it take to get my site?

Since no two sites are the same, the time frame varies but we can usually get working on your site within a few days. The average small to medium site takes approximately a week (possibly less!) for us (as developers and designers) to create and can be up and running soon thereafter.

Do you handle getting our domain name and a web host?

Yes, we as professional developers can register your domain name, i.e. www.yourname.co.uk, for you and also handle your hosting needs. This includes getting the entire site up-and-running on the internet.

What is a 'domain' name?

This is what is known as your web address on the Internet. It operates similar to a PO Box number in convertional mail. For example, http://www.yourdomain.co.uk

What is a URL?

This is short for Uniform Resource Location, which is the addressing system used in the World Wide Web and other Internet resources. For example, http://www.yourdomain.co.uk/somedirectory/somepage.html

How do I get my own domain?

To get your own domain, you must purchase one of our plans, we do not just offer a domain registration service. You provide your company name, and we will search whether it is available, if not we will try to find the closest, most suitable variant of it on your behalf.

How can I get people to go to my site?

Having a nice site does not ensure that anyone except you will ever see it. Promotion is vital. Getting a site listed among the top rankings of the search engines is an effective means to get people to your site and should be included in the developers plans. Also, putting the web address on printed stationary and business cards is another simple yet effective way of getting people to visit the site.

How do I put up my web pages?

We will do this on your behalf. Once we have designed the pages for you and you have agreed to the final website design and layout, we will transfer the site to your registered domain name.

How many 'hits' can I receive?

We do not measure your domains usage by hits. We also do not measure the bandwidth usage by the you website, although many companies do and restrict sites that exceed a certain limit.

How many e-mail addresses do I have?

With the Medium and Large plan, you receive 1 POP3 mail-box - this is where mail sent to ...@yourdomain.co.uk is stored. However, you are allowed unlimited e-mail aliases, this it the name before the '@' site - so you can put anything before this sign, e.g. sales@yourdomain.co.uk, support@yourdomain.co.uk, joebloggs@yourdomain.co.uk, j.smith@yourdomain.co.uk etc.

Do you offer dial-up internet access?

How do I upgrade or downgrade from one plan to another?

What contract and payment terms are available?

We bill at annual increments and require a minimum year contract. We currently do not accept credit card but we will be arranging a merchant account soon. You can pay by cash, or cheque at present.
